Avatars on OpenSim grids

NeuraCore connects avatars to OpenSimulator grids as well as to Second Life.

The list of grids

File → OpenSim shows the grids an avatar can live on. It starts with a few long-running public ones and the address an OpenSimulator running on your own computer answers on, and you can edit, remove or add to any of it. Second Life’s own two grids are always available and are not in this list.

You can fill a grid in by hand, or type the address of its server and press Discover: the grid then describes itself and its name, short name and real login address are filled in for you. Check what it filled in, then save.

Registering an avatar on one

In Avatars → Setup, choose Add Avatar, set Grid to OpenSim and pick the grid. Everything else is the same as for a Second Life avatar.

The same name can now be registered twice if the two are on different grids: Alice Resident in Second Life and Alice Resident on OSgrid are two residents, and each keeps its own settings, conversations, routes and history. Lists show which grid each one is on. The same name on the same grid is still refused, because that is the same avatar twice.

Two things worth knowing

Most OpenSim grids, and every sim running on your own computer, are reached without encryption, which means the avatar’s password travels to that grid in the clear. Those grids are marked in the list and NeuraCore says so again in the form. The choice is yours; refusing them would mean refusing OpenSim altogether.

Licences work exactly as they always did, and an OpenSim avatar can hold one and can be your main avatar. The one rule is that a licence seats avatars from its own side: a licence held by a Second Life avatar seats Second Life avatars, and one held by an OpenSim avatar seats OpenSim avatars.
